“…do theology with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other.” (Karl Barth)
At First Presbyterian Church, we take study of faith very seriously, always seeking to live into our church’s tradition of “reformed, always being reformed.” We believe that the Holy Spirit is continually at work to nurture us and inspire us, stretch us and change us. To this end, we gather together to learn and study regularly, always open to learning new things and stretching ourselves in new ways.
We offer two adult church school classes on Sunday mornings at 9:30. The Men’s Bible Class meets in the basement of the church and follows The Present Word curriculum of our denomination. The other church school class meets in the Gardenside Parlor and studies various topics through lecture, video and discussion.
Two book groups are offered at the church. Our Wednesday Book Group is a long tradition at our church, and has poured over books by authors such as Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and Jim Wallis. Our Pastor’s Book Group meets monthly to discuss a book of our minister’s choosing in its entirety. This book group has reviewed texts on such topics as daily living, death and dying, discernment, aging and Mr. Rogers.
On Sunday evenings, women of the church join together for study that explores the life of faith. The time is flexible, allowing space for book study, video series, curriculum, and special programming like exploring the Enneagram. All women of the church are welcome.
